    The Photographic Index of Australian Fishes (PIAF) is a collection of over 40,000 colour transparencies of some 2,500 fish species, representing more than half of the Australian fish fauna, held in conjunction with the Australian National Fish Collection (formerly the I.S.R. Munro Ichthyological Collection). It encompasses all of Australia's commercial seafood species, and contains the only photographs in existence of many bycatch species. It contains images of species from rivers and estuaries, from near-shore to the deep ocean, from the temperate regions to the tropics, as well as from remote offshore islands and the sub-Antarctic. CSIRO marine scientists have assembled PIAF over the last 30 years as a by-product of coastal and deep ocean surveys. PIAF images of commercial species have recently been published in the Australian Seafood Handbook, and also been used extensively in several books, such as South East Fishery Quota Species: an identification guide, Field Guide to Trawl Fish from Temperate Waters of Australia and Continental Shelf Fishes of Northern and North-Western Australia.

    This record describes the seabed image data (digitised 35 mm slide still camera images) collected during the NORFANZ voyage on the Norfolk Ridge and Lord Howe Rise in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, in May-June 2003. Fourteen seamount and slope sites were sampled, 10 on the Norfolk Ridge and 4 on the Lord Howe Rise. The camera was deployed using two systems: (1) a headline camera unit deployed with the orange roughy net, and (2) a vertical-drop camera system. The headline camera system yielded usable photographs from 14 operations at 6 sites on the Norfolk Ridge and 1 operation at 1 site on the Lord Howe Rise where the camera frame got heavily damaged. The drop camera system was used on 7 occasions: 5 operations at 4 sites on the Norfolk Ridge and 2 operations at 2 sites on the Lord Howe Rise. The dataset contains 2141 images of the seabed.

    This record describes sediment trap sample data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. 2 moored sediment trap arrays with <21 individual traps were deployed on a single date in November 1992 at two depths (305 and 952 m), allowed to remain open for various times, and retrieved in April 1993. Free-floating traps were also deployed for approx. 24 hr and 48 hr in November 1992 and April 1993, respectively. On recovery, samples were analysed for weight dry weight, chemical analysis for carbonate, reactive phosphorus, total carbon, total nitrogen, biogenic opal, and phytoplankton pigments, and sub-samples were also taken for SEM (scanning electron microscope) identification of phytoplankton species.

    A study of the scallop resources, advection and settlement of P fumatus in Bass Strait was carried out in Bass Strait and Great Oyster Bay on a series of cruises from 1986 to 1992. Scallop growth and reproduction were also analysed. Vessels used included Merindah Pearl and Dell Richey. Additional data identified in June 2015. See TRIM references in stored data location.

    This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 1/79. This cruise took place in the North West Shelf during 21 November - 17 December 1979, under the leadership of Peter Young. Biological data collected on this cruise include distribution, abundance, lengths, weights, sex, and gonadal conditions for the following fish families: Lutjanidae (8 species), Nemipteridae (5 species), Pentapodidae (1 species), Lethrinidae (4 species), Pomadasyidae (1 species) and Priacanthidae (2 species). Stomach contents, scales and otoliths were also retained from these species and from Synodontidae. Photographs of approximately 200 fish species for the CSIRO taxonomic and photographic index of North West Shelf fishes. Plankton samples from day and night sampling. Deep midwater fish samples for the Australian Museum. Kenchington and Jock Young. Biological data collected on this cruise include demersal fish samples from trawling. Blue grenadier was the dominant species by weight. Morphometric and electrophoretic samples of blue grenadier. Juvenile blue grenadier samples. Pelagic samples from trawling included large catches of the lantern fish Lampanyctodes hectoris. Samples from longlining included small numbers of Brama brama, Rexea solandri, blue shark (Prionace glauca) and two Mako sharks (isurus oxyrhynchus). Ichthyoplankton and phytoplankton samples.     This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 7/87. This cruise took place in the North West Shelf during 16 September - 15 October 1987, under the leadership of Keith Sainsbury and Wade Whitelaw. Biological data collected on this cruise include demersal fish and invertebrate samples from 105 random stations and underwater camera photography of 75 stations trawled. Catches were identifed and weighed by species with up to 100 species being caught per half hour trawl, with the greatest diversity occurring at the shallower stations. Length frequency data was collected for 14 species of fish (see taxonomy keywords), and otoliths were collected for 4 of the major species (L. sebae, L. choerorynchus, S. undosquamis and N. furcosus). Stomach contents were also collected for the same 4 species over 3 periods of 48 hours within 3 feeding study areas. A total of 58 trap sets were made during the cruise, the total catch was 137 kg (catches range from 0~35 kg per trap hour). Underwater photography of the fish entering and leaving the traps were also obtained. Taxonomic materials and data were collected for WA Dept of Conservation and Land Management and WA Dept of Fisheries. Scallops catches of 15 and 34 kg per 1/2 hour trawl were obtained from two of the random trawl stations. Associated with the scallops were large rays (Himantura sp.).
